BassScene & Other

Tape B is Kemal Berk Alkanat, born in Istanbul in 1997 and raised in Florida from age three, and he is one of the fastest-rising dubstep producers in North America. His hook is nostalgia: he flips 2000s and 2010s hip-hop and early SoundCloud-era dubstep into modern heavy bass, and he built the following on free mixtape series - Driptapes, Vibe Check and the hour-long CarTunes mixes - rather than on singles alone. He says he writes five to ten ideas a week and only releases the ones that make him laugh, which is roughly what the sets sound like: emotional melodies and familiar samples set up against very heavy drops. Recent work includes 'Word Scramble' with Zeds Dead and Subtronics, 'Light You Up' with GRiZ, 'Gas Pedal' with John Summit and Subtronics, and a two-night Red Rocks headline run - and the two Seattle nights at WaMu are exactly that scale of booking.

Popularity

How this is measured

An absolute, national (US) measure — not a ranking against the other artists on this site. We take the strongest of three open signals: ListenBrainz listens, English Wikipedia pageviews, and the number of Wikipedia language editions that have an article. The strongest one wins, so a signal we couldn't read never drags the result down. Bucket 1 means measured and small. Unrated never means small — it means we don't have the numbers.

What listeners say SAMPLE DATA

⚠ Placeholder — not real reviews. Sample data — these are generated placeholders, not real listener reviews. A sentiment aggregator will replace this section with sourced listener feedback.

The press record on Tape B is thick but it is coverage, not reception: a Google News sweep returned 40-plus items across edm.com, EDM Identity, The Daily Frequency and We Rave You, and essentially all of them are release, collaboration or tour announcements. UKF's interview describes him as one of the hottest dubstep acts in North America off a sold-out national run and a sold-out Mission Ballroom, and a handful of repeat-attendee comments surfaced in search results ('one of my favorite sets from him all year'; 'my fifth time seeing Tape B and he just keeps getting better'), but LiveRate has no page for him and no full review was readable. That is not enough independent opinion to score, so treat the figures below as sample data.

Loved

+ nostalgia flips of 2000s hip-hop and early dubstep land hard with a crowd that grew up on them+ reported heavy investment in production - lasers and show design singled out by attendees+ sets move across dubstep, trap, halftime and experimental bass rather than sitting in one lane+ high repeat-attendance: several commenters describe seeing him many times

Gripes

− very heavy release and touring cadence - the mixtape-series output is prolific enough that some sets recycle recent flips− no critical review of a set was reachable, so the enthusiasm above is unbalanced by any published reservation
