Indie & Alt ElectronicScene & Other

Sylvan Esso is the Durham, North Carolina duo of vocalist Amelia Meath and producer Nick Sanborn - folk-trained singing laid over minimal machine beats, crisp drum programming and thick synth bass. They are Grammy-nominated, they run their own label Psychic Hotline, and their album Ow (infinity) is out September 11. Note for listeners: the duo pulled their entire catalogue off Spotify in September 2025 over CEO Daniel Ek's investment in military AI, so Bandcamp, Apple Music and YouTube are the working ways to hear them. Live they play as a real band rather than a laptop set, which is why they land on electronic and indie bills alike.

Popularity

How this is measured

An absolute, national (US) measure — not a ranking against the other artists on this site. We take the strongest of three open signals: ListenBrainz listens, English Wikipedia pageviews, and the number of Wikipedia language editions that have an article. The strongest one wins, so a signal we couldn't read never drags the result down. Bucket 1 means measured and small. Unrated never means small — it means we don't have the numbers.

What listeners say

88/100

Sylvan Esso are one of the better-reviewed live electronic acts going: LiveRate aggregates 88% across 96 reviewed shows, placing them in the top 5% of live performers, and individual reviews reach for words like euphoric, dynamic and dance party rather than the tasteful adjectives their records usually attract. The recurring point is that Sanborn's machines hit much harder on stage than on record - a Glasgow reviewer wrote that the Hey Mami bassline 'absolutely thunders off the walls' - while Meath's vocal is 'just as floaty and impressive as on disc'. The practical caveats are off-stage: sets can run short (~45 minutes per LiveRate's data), and the duo pulled their catalogue from Spotify in 2025, so casual listeners cannot preview them there.

Loved

+ machines sound far heavier live than on record - real sub-bass+ Meath's vocals as strong live as on the recordings+ genuinely a dance show, not a seated indie set+ excellent set pacing and crowd connection+ consistently reviewed as a top-tier live act across many years of shows

Gripes

− sets can run on the short side (~45 minutes per LiveRate data)− catalogue withdrawn from Spotify, so casual listeners cannot preview them there
