Indie & Alt ElectronicScene & Other

Magic Sword are a masked, cloaked synthwave trio from Boise, Idaho — The Keeper, The Seer and The Weaver — who never show their faces, never speak on stage, and stage every show as a chapter of an ongoing comic-book mythology about immortals bound to a magical sword. Musically it is instrumental retrowave with real drums and guitar played over the synths, which is what separates the live show from a laptop set. Their PNW dates are intimate by their standards: Mississippi Studios in Portland on September 1 and the all-ages McMenamins Elks Temple in Tacoma on September 9, 2026.

Popularity

How this is measured

An absolute, national (US) measure — not a ranking against the other artists on this site. We take the strongest of three open signals: ListenBrainz listens, English Wikipedia pageviews, and the number of Wikipedia language editions that have an article. The strongest one wins, so a signal we couldn't read never drags the result down. Bucket 1 means measured and small. Unrated never means small — it means we don't have the numbers.

What listeners say

82/100

Reviewers consistently treat a Magic Sword show as theatre first and a concert second, and consistently come away sold: the LED masks, the narrated lore and the crowd waving light-up swords land as immersive rather than gimmicky, and the live drummer and guitarist give the synth material weight it does not have on record. The reservations are just as consistent. There is no singing and no stage banter at all, which will not suit everyone; one reviewer found the set at only about fifty minutes too short for the size of their catalogue, with the guitar turning shrill, the drums sitting high in the mix and several songs ending abruptly rather than resolving.

Loved

+ fully committed masked-persona spectacle and lore+ live drums and guitar anchor the synth material+ crowd participation with light-up swords+ accessible to newcomers, not just genre fans

Gripes

− no vocals and zero stage banter — an acquired taste− sets can run short (~50 minutes) for the size of the catalogue− mix issues reported: shrill guitar, drums too far forward− some songs end abruptly instead of resolving
