TechnoIndie & Alt Electronic

Kontravoid is Cameron Findlay, a Canadian producer who drummed for Crystal Castles and Trust and founded the synth-pop band Parallels before going solo behind a mask in 2012. The project is cold, dance-floor darkwave: EBM-tempo drum machines, gothic synth lines and deep, heavily processed vocals, staged with masks, strobes and fog. Records including Undone have made him a fixture on the international goth and industrial club circuit, and he performs alone rather than with a band. For a PNW crowd this is a club-night booking closer to a body-music DJ set than a rock show, and it lands squarely in the same room as the region's darkwave scene.

Popularity

How this is measured

An absolute, national (US) measure — not a ranking against the other artists on this site. We take the strongest of three open signals: ListenBrainz listens, English Wikipedia pageviews, and the number of Wikipedia language editions that have an article. The strongest one wins, so a signal we couldn't read never drags the result down. Bucket 1 means measured and small. Unrated never means small — it means we don't have the numbers.

What listeners say SAMPLE DATA

⚠ Placeholder — not real reviews. Sample data — these are generated placeholders, not real listener reviews. A sentiment aggregator will replace this section with sourced listener feedback.

Two live reviews were reachable and they land differently, which is itself useful. Both agree the masked, minimal-motion stage presence is genuinely magnetic and that the synth programming and production are strong for a solo performer with no band behind him. But one reviewer was blunt that the slower, more pensive stretches lost them entirely, and found the processed vocals sat oddly apart from the instrumentals. Two reviews - one of them an old opening slot - is too thin to score, so this is sample data.

Loved

+ theatrical masked stage presence that holds attention with almost no movement+ synth programming and effects repeatedly singled out as eerie and distinctive+ production values land for a solo act - lights, strobes and volume are dialled in+ well-paced sets that keep a crowd going to the end

Gripes

− one reviewer checked out entirely during the slower, more pensive passages and found the tempo swings hard to stay with− vocals described as distorted and somewhat disconnected from the instrumental bed− only two live reviews were reachable and one is an old support slot, so neither may reflect the current headline show
