Kassie Krut is a New York trio - Kasra Kurt and Eve Alpert, both formerly of the Philadelphia band Palm, alongside producer Matt Anderegg. It started as Kurt's solo outlet for UK club music and became a band after Palm dissolved in 2023, at which point the guitars were traded for synths and hardware. The result is industrial, grime- and EBM-inflected electronic pop built from scratch-made sounds - car alarms, notification chimes, dial tones - set against stutter-step hi-hats and tensile bass. Their self-titled debut EP on Fire Talk (December 2024) picked up best-of-2024 nods from Pitchfork, Stereogum, The Guardian, Mixmag, NPR Music and Paste, and an expanded edition brought in Panda Bear, Container and DJ Travella.

Popularity

How this is measured

An absolute, national (US) measure — not a ranking against the other artists on this site. We take the strongest of three open signals: ListenBrainz listens, English Wikipedia pageviews, and the number of Wikipedia language editions that have an article. The strongest one wins, so a signal we couldn't read never drags the result down. Bucket 1 means measured and small. Unrated never means small — it means we don't have the numbers.

What listeners say

85/100

Critical reception has been unusually strong for a band this new: the debut EP drew year-end recognition from Pitchfork, Stereogum, The Guardian, Mixmag, NPR Music, Paste and Hearing Things, and individual reviews praise the trio for wringing a lot out of a deliberately narrow palette - found-sound noise, hard percussion, no guitars. Be aware this reading is based on record reviews, not on live feedback: they are a young act mostly playing support slots, and no accessible body of show reviews exists yet. Their catalogue is also small - one EP plus a remix edition - so sets are short, and the sound is abrasive by design rather than by accident.

Loved

+ critically acclaimed debut EP; multiple 2024 year-end lists+ distinctive palette built from found sound rather than stock synth presets+ credible pedigree - two members came from Palm+ collaborators of real standing on the expanded edition, including Panda Bear+ genuine club music rather than a rock band with synths

Gripes

− very small catalogue, so sets are short and largely unproven live− abrasive, repetition-driven sound that will not suit every room− acclaim is for the recordings; live reputation is not yet established
