TechnoIndie & Alt Electronic

Julien-K is the electronic-rock project Amir Derakh and Ryan Shuck built out of Orgy, formed in Long Beach, California in the early 2000s and still fronted by the pair alongside drummer Galen Waling. They sit where industrial rock, synth-pop and dance production overlap - big hooks stacked on hard electronics - and have pushed further into fully electronic territory on recent work, most recently the album DRK|MODE. They are also the band behind Technical Difficulty from Michael Bay's Transformers, plus music for Sonic and Transformers games. For a PNW goth/industrial night they are a legacy name that still tours like a working band rather than a nostalgia act.

Popularity

How this is measured

An absolute, national (US) measure — not a ranking against the other artists on this site. We take the strongest of three open signals: ListenBrainz listens, English Wikipedia pageviews, and the number of Wikipedia language editions that have an article. The strongest one wins, so a signal we couldn't read never drags the result down. Bucket 1 means measured and small. Unrated never means small — it means we don't have the numbers.

What listeners say SAMPLE DATA

⚠ Placeholder — not real reviews. Sample data — these are generated placeholders, not real listener reviews. A sentiment aggregator will replace this section with sourced listener feedback.

Only one full live review was reachable, from a 2026 package-tour date, and it is enthusiastic without reservation: it credits the band with kinetic urgency, big hooks over hard electronics, a well-balanced setlist drawing on both old and new material, and genuine crowd interaction, including Derakh working a theremin and pulling the front row into it. One glowing review from a support slot is not a consensus, and no critical counterweight surfaced, so this is sample data rather than a verdict.

Loved

+ reviewed as high-energy and urgent, with hooks that carry over hard electronics+ interactive stage presence - the theremin bit pulls the front row in+ vocals described as stylish without tipping into affectation+ setlist balanced across newer and older material rather than leaning on the back catalogue

Gripes

− only one full live review was reachable, and it offered no criticism at all - a thin and one-sided basis− that review covers a support slot on a multi-band package tour, not a headline set− the act's profile still leans heavily on the members' Orgy history in press framing
