Downtempo & ExperimentalIndie & Alt Electronic

Gorillaz are the English virtual band Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett formed in 1998, fronted by four fictional members — 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs — with Albarn as the only constant musical contributor. The catalogue moves through trip-hop, hip-hop, electronic and dub, from the triple-platinum debut and "Clint Eastwood" through Demon Days and Plastic Beach to 2026's The Mountain. Live, it is a full ensemble band plus rotating guest vocalists playing under Hewlett's animation on arena-scale screens, which is why the Moda Center and Climate Pledge Arena dates read as a production show as much as a concert.

Popularity

How this is measured

An absolute, national (US) measure — not a ranking against the other artists on this site. We take the strongest of three open signals: ListenBrainz listens, English Wikipedia pageviews, and the number of Wikipedia language editions that have an article. The strongest one wins, so a signal we couldn't read never drags the result down. Bucket 1 means measured and small. Unrated never means small — it means we don't have the numbers.

What listeners say

85/100

Critics in 2026 rated The Mountain as the band's strongest work in years - Dork called it 'the strongest case in years that Gorillaz can still make records that matter' - and the arena run behind it is consistently described as top-tier: Hewlett's animation across full-width screens, a large ensemble band, and rotating guests (Del the Funky Homosapien, Black Thought, Russell Mael, Joe Talbot and others at the LA opener) in sold-out rooms. The recurring complaint is aimed at the record rather than the show: even admiring reviews concede the album 'does meander' and is uneven and overfull in stretches, and it falls short of the era-defining weight of Demon Days or Plastic Beach.

Loved

+ Jamie Hewlett's animation running full-width on arena screens+ large ensemble band with rotating surprise guests rather than a backing track+ sold-out arena rooms; energy spikes hard when the singles land+ Albarn works the barricade and engages the front rows directly+ The Mountain reviewed as their strongest work in years

Gripes

− even positive reviews concede The Mountain 'does meander' and is uneven and overfull in stretches− not era-defining in the way of Demon Days or Plastic Beach, per reviewers− setlists lean heavily on the new album before the well-known songs arrive− occasional on-stage technical hiccups, including a malfunctioning melodica at the LA opener
