Downtempo & ExperimentalScene & Other

DJ Shadow is Joshua Davis, the Northern California producer whose 1996 debut 'Endtroducing.....' was built entirely from samples - it holds a Guinness record for that and sits on Time's all-time 100 albums list - and who effectively wrote the template for instrumental hip-hop that followed. He has spent the three decades since refusing to repeat it, through 'The Private Press', 'The Outsider', 'The Mountain Will Fall', the collaboration-heavy 'Our Pathetic Age' and 2023's guest-free 'Action Adventure'. Live he is a working turntablist, not a playback act: he pulls his own catalogue apart on the decks and rebuilds it in front of the room. The 2026 PNW dates - Crystal Ballroom in Portland on October 16 and the Paramount in Seattle on October 17 - are part of a fall North American run his own site announces as celebrating 30 years of 'Endtroducing', on which he plays a set focused on that album for the first time.

Popularity

How this is measured

An absolute, national (US) measure — not a ranking against the other artists on this site. We take the strongest of three open signals: ListenBrainz listens, English Wikipedia pageviews, and the number of Wikipedia language editions that have an article. The strongest one wins, so a signal we couldn't read never drags the result down. Bucket 1 means measured and small. Unrated never means small — it means we don't have the numbers.

What listeners say

87/100

Reviewers agree on the craft and split on the setlist. The consistent praise is that he genuinely performs - a Portland critic called the Revolution Hall set a tightrope walk of rehearsed structure and improvised whimsy, and others describe his scratching as infectious to watch and his range across genres as the thing that holds a room. The consistent complaint is the flip side of that: recent tours leaned on newer material and rap collaborations and treated the famous back catalogue as teases and fragments, which one reviewer said would frustrate anyone who came for a nostalgic 'Endtroducing' night and an attendee described as hearing thirty seconds of your favourites as lead-ins to newer songs. That specific criticism is the one thing the 2026 run is built to answer, since it is the first time he has played a set centred on that album.

Loved

+ live turntablism and scratching are genuinely performed, not pressed play+ reworks and deconstructs his own tracks in front of the room+ wide crate-dug range across genres holds attention across a full set+ immersive visuals paired well with the music+ crowds stay engaged and audibly react to recognised samples

Gripes

− recent tours favoured new material over the classic catalogue− familiar tracks often teased in fragments rather than played straight− frustrating for anyone attending expecting a nostalgia set
