TechnoIndie & Alt ElectronicScene & Other

Boy Harsher are Jae Matthews and Augustus Muller, an American darkwave duo who formed in Savannah, Georgia in 2013 and now work out of Northampton, Massachusetts. Their sound is deliberately spare - analog synths, hard drum-machine patterns and half-whispered vocals - which puts them closer to an EBM or industrial club record than to anything goth-rock, and it is why they cross over into electronic bills as readily as into indie ones. They run their own imprint, Nude Club Records, which is releasing the album GET MEAN. For PNW audiences they are a dark-club draw rather than a festival act: expect strobe, fog and a set built for dancing.

Popularity

How this is measured

An absolute, national (US) measure — not a ranking against the other artists on this site. We take the strongest of three open signals: ListenBrainz listens, English Wikipedia pageviews, and the number of Wikipedia language editions that have an article. The strongest one wins, so a signal we couldn't read never drags the result down. Bucket 1 means measured and small. Unrated never means small — it means we don't have the numbers.

What listeners say

75/100

Boy Harsher have a strong live reputation among critics: LiveRate aggregates 75% across ten reviewed shows, with recurring praise for Jae Matthews' stage presence, sets that stay danceable rather than drifting into mood-piece territory, and rooms that sell out to crowds described as having waited months. Reviewers call the shows dreamy, eerie and intense - unsettling vocal delivery over gritty beats that translates physically in a room - and note the duo breaking out of a niche toward a wider audience. The honest caveats: the sample is small at ten reviews, and the presentation is dark and scene-specific by design.

Loved

+ Jae Matthews' stage presence carries the room+ sets stay danceable rather than turning into a mood piece+ cinematic, atmospheric staging that translates the records physically+ frequently sold out; strong crowd commitment

Gripes

− eerie, intense and deliberately dark - not a casual night out− aggregate rests on only ten critic reviews− niche enough that the room can feel scene-specific
