Beats Antique is an Oakland, California trio - David Satori, Tommy "Sidecar" Cappel and dancer-choreographer Zoe Jakes - who have been welding Middle Eastern and Balkan instrumentation onto glitch-hop, dubstep and brass-band breaks since 2007. The records move between downtempo world-fusion and heavy bass, but the group is really a live proposition: played instruments and double percussion setups on stage, costume-heavy staging, and tribal-fusion dance rather than a laptop set. That crossover appeal is why they turn up on both club and festival bills in Seattle and Portland rather than in one scene or the other.
